This blog post is inspired by my Millennial Aged Children. They told me that my next blog post should be about Glowing Up and how women my age are experiencing the Best Glow Up’s.
Urban Dictionary has several definitions for the phrase “Glow Up” or “Glo Up” as the kids say it. I personally leaned more towards the definition: “A twist of the phrase “grow up”, referring to a person’s incredible transformation. This is usually based on increase of style and self-confidence“.
I chose to go with it not only because I feel like my children keep me youthful and on top of my game but, because I understand where they’re coming from. I look at a lot of my favorite Celebrities and Inspirational Women who are around my age or slightly older and I see how they’ve transformed over the years. There’s something special about being 40+ in this day and age. We are 60’s and 70’s babies who in my opinion went through the best fashion era’s ever! The 70’s were Groovy or Funky, with the Afro Puffs, Mini Skirts, Bell Bottoms, Platform Shoes, Music, and Movies. I will just throw out my Favorite Person from the 70’s and move on um Hello Foxy Brown.. aka Ms. Pamela Grier. The 80’s were Edgy.. there was Bold Style, and Everything was Colorful and Fun. We had fashion influence from Madonna, Janet Jackson, Prince, Boy George, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, and the list goes on. The 90’s is where it was at for me personally, I loved EVERYTHING about the 90’s the Music, the Fashion, the TV Shows and Movies, it was hands down my favorite Decade!
The 90’s gave me life.. I mean my whole entire life! We had fashion influence from Tyra Banks, Brandy, Cher, Dion, and Tai from the movie Clueless (1995), Hilary from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, TLC, Aaliyah, Brittany Spears, Naomi Campbell, The Spice Girls, The Ladies of Sex and The City, the Ladies of 90210, and too many R& B Singers and Rappers to name.
To me the 90’s were Crazy, Sexy, and Cool. I was probably the Biggest Fan of the Hip Hop Girls Group TLC. No.. I was a Super Fan who dressed like them and even cut my hair off like T-Boz’s. 🙂 You couldn’t tell me that I wasn’t an honorary 4th group member.. lol
(Unfortunately, I don’t have any pics. If I find one.. I’ll definitely Post it.)
Anywhoo.. back to the point of the Post. We are talking about Glo Ups. The women that I’m showcasing below are women that are in the Public Eye and have had amazing transformations right in front of our eyes over the years. These ladies have definitely showed us amazing fashion, and how taking great care of your self can have a positive effect on your looks as you age.
Classic Examples of a few of my Absolute Faves are….
Ms. Janet Jackson
Mrs. Jada Pinkett Smith
Ms. Taraji P. Henson
My Girl Gabby.. Mrs. Gabrielle Union (Wade)
Ms. Oprah Winfrey
And last but, not least.. Mrs. Michelle Obama
These are just a few ladies that I’ve watched transform over the years. A lot of people like to think that when one has money it’s easy to transform into a beautiful person. Which is not true at all. Sure, in this day and age you can pay to look however, you want with the right amount of money and a good plastic surgeon but, I am attributing all of the beauty that we see above to women who have taken great care of themselves over the years and are confident in who they have become.
This is one of the things that I love most about being 40+.
I love the fact that I’ve lived through a few decades and that I’ve been able to experiment with style and see trends come and go and come back again. I am finally in a place to where I’m comfortable with the woman that I have become. I have my own Beauty Secrets and Regimens. I’m super conscious of my Health and Love my Body. I have my own Personal Style (I only wear Black and I Love It)… Trends are a thing of the past for me at this age. It’s all about what’s comfortable, looks good on me, and makes me feel good in my skin. With age comes Confidence and Wisdom. I have defined who I am as a woman and I love everything about me!
Here’s to my Glo Up…
